You’ve been watching the Olympics and you notice something.  What are all these round purple marks on Michael Phelps and your other favorite Olympians?

The round circular marks are known as cupping.  Cupping is a form of Ancient Chinese therapy that is utilized for a plethora of ailments.  Most commonly it is used for pain or discomfort and alleviating toxins from the body.  The circular marks you see, known as “cup marks” are an indicator of what is physiologically occurring in the body, in particular in that specific area.

The darker purple colors are more of an indicator that blood and/or toxins are stored in that part of the body.  The darker they are is also an indication of more chronic congestion in that particular part of the body.  The lighter red colors are an expression of more inflammation occurring in the body.

In regard to Michael Phelps, he is continuously utilizing the muscles in his shoulder and upper back area which makes cupping that area great for relief.  From continuously utilizes those muscles in his body, when cupped he is left with dark purple marks; an indication of blood stagnation.  Utilizing cupping not only promotes circulation, but allows for more flexibility and flow.  The cupping in turns can help Michael gain a better advantage during his performance as his mobility and circulation is enhanced.

What Is Cupping?

Cupping is a form of Ancient Chinese therapy in which the practitioner creates suction in a cup, by means of heat or by suctioning out air.  Through the suction, the skin and superficial muscle layer is drawn into and held in the cup.  When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis is formed and localized healing takes place.  In some cases, the cup may be moved while the suction of skin is active, causing a regional pulling of the skin and muscle known as moving cupping.  Cupping can be described as a reverse massage and is the best deep tissue massage available.

How Does It Work?

Cupping is applied to certain acupuncture points, as well as to regions of the body that are affected by pain. When the cups are moved along the surface of the skin, the treatment is somewhat like Gua Sha.  Still, a certain amount of bruising is expected both from fixed position cupping and with movement of the cups.

In some cases, a small amount of blood letting  is done first, using a pricking needle, and then the cup is applied over the site.  This technique promotes blood circulation, removes blood stagnation, and alleviate swelling and pain.  It is employed especially when there is a toxic heat syndrome and for a variety of acute ailments.

Cupping has been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, causing tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, clear colon blockages, help activate and clear the veins, arteries and capillaries, activate the skin, clear stretch marks and improve varicose veins.

What About Cupping Marks?

The most common misunderstanding regarding cupping is the after affects of the marks left on the skin.  Cupping can leave marks which are extremely powerful and beneficial to the body.  The marks indicate that the stagnation or diseases has been moved from the deeper tissue layers to the surface.  This allows fresh, oxygenated blood to nourish and heal the underlying areas.  The marks sometimes can feel sore after a treatment (much like a massage), but are usually painless.  The discoloration to the skin is not permanent and will fade from the body typically 2 – 7 days from treatment.

Is Cupping Safe?

While cupping is considered relatively safe it can cause some swelling and bruising on the skin. As noted above, these marks/bruising are a result of removing stagnation and disease processes from the deep tissue layers.
